While in the Bahamas, my wife and I took a taxi into the heart of Nassau City to see the real way of life on the island. Our driver grew up in the area, and took us to the poorest sections of the city.
The poverty areas are covered with trash, left in yards and on the streets, and no one seems to be in a hurry to clean any of it up. In 2011 Hurricane Irene did a lot of damage to the homes in and businesses, and it's more than obvious throughout. Most of the damaged structures have been left un-repaired, but that does not stop people from living in them. A place you would look at and think was an old abandoned and decaying shack, is a home to someone.
The beauty of the city is the people. Overall they are happy and content. They have grown up in this environment, and don't know any other way of life. They take it one day at a time, and love life while going through it.
Thank you to our guide/ driver Bernard. He gave us a true look into the heart and soul of the true spirit of the people of Nassau City.
