The Franklin Institute: “The Color of Science”

The program kicked-off with an evening panel discussion among four ScienceMakers®: Dr. Sharon Haynie, Principal Investigator, DuPont Company; Dr. Chad Jenkins, Associate Professor of Computer Science, Brown University; Dr. Edward Tunstel, Senior Robotics Engineer, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and Professor James West, Research Professor, Johns Hopkins University. TFI’s Chief Astronomer Derrick Pitts moderated the sold-out panel discussion.

The Saturday portion of the program included student interactive activities featuring the four featured scientists and other notable scientists of color. Local youth programs at the Philadelphia Zoo, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the New Jersey Aquatic Center, the Please Touch Museum and the Philadelphia Art Museum were invited to participate in the event. The specific purpose of the youth program was to increase awareness of scientists of color and provide mentorship and role models for the K-12 community.
